A chilly Winnipeg evening greeted those attending the ceremonial Christmas tree lighting at City Hall Thursday night.
The 12 metre Colorado Spruce was donated by a homeowner in the Maples after it outgrew his front yard. Ron Gerth told reporters the tree had been a staple on his property for about 45 years.
Gerth was given the honour of lighting the 9,000 LED bulbs on the tree.
Mayor Brian Bowman hosted the festivities as he was flanked by his wife and two sons. City Councillors Devi Sharma and Scott Gillingham also attended.
Members of the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic service were on hand along with the Salvation Army as part of their Toy Mountain drive.
