A domestic dispute turned violent between a couple in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
Winnipeg Police have arrested a Winnipeg man, 31, for allegedly forcing his common law-partner, 22, into a car and then driving it into the back of a semi.
Officers believe at around 2 a.m. on January 1 the two were arguing outside a nightclub on Portage Avenue near the University of Winnipeg. The man then forced the woman into the front seat and began assaulting her while driving dangerously.
Police allege he guided the passenger side of the vehicle towards a parked semi-trailer near Arlington Street and St. Matthews Avenue causing a crash.
The suspect fled the scene on foot, while the victim was taken to hospital where she remains in stable condition.
Later that night, officers caught up with Christopher Rutherford and arrested him.
Charges include: attempted murder, kidnapping and dangerous operation of a vehicle. Police say the suspect also violated several protection orders his partner had against him.
Rutherford remains in custody.
