It’s a late Christmas gift from her brother, but for this Manitoba woman it may be the greatest gift of all.
32-year-old Cheryl Simoens will be getting a kidney from older brother Michael, a donation she needs due to a chronic illness.
Simoens was born with cystinosis which is a genetic kidney disease that left her needing a new kidney by age 11. A donation from her father lasted for nearly 20 years.
Her kidneys started to fail again and she was in need of another donor when Michael offered one of his.
“I feel incredibly grateful to have family members who are willing to donate an organ so selflessly,” Cheryl says. “It is an indescribable feeling to be given the chance to get your life back and I am overwhelmed with joy to be able to live life to the fullest once again.”
The procedure is expected to take place Thursday. After the surgery Simoens wants to return to rock climbing and running while also going back to school and working full time.
