The road to Assiniboia Downs becoming an urban reserve begins today in St. James.
The Peguis First Nation and the Manitoba Jockey Club will present their plan to a city committee.
Eventually, the long haul through the system needs to end with full council approval.
If it all goes through, the Downs’ Darren Dunn says you’ll see a newly developed area at the Downs.
“In a nutshell, we intend to commercially develop the southern portion of the land assets at Assiniboia Downs with Peguis First Nation through a joint venture partnership,” Downs explains. “To build a hotel, conference centre and expanded gaming opportunities. That would be a quick capsule version of it.”
The jockey club has said the development would be worth $100 million and create 1,000 jobs.
