After giving up a late tying goal, Blake Wheeler scored the winner in OT as the Winnipeg Jets beat Nashville 5-4 Thursday night.
The Jets came into the night riding a 3 game losing streak and got off to a rough start. A video review gave the Predators the opening goal just a minute into the contest.
Coming into the second down 1-0, the Jets put up three unanswered goals. Dustin Byfuglien’s pair of goals sandwiched a Bryan Little powerplay goal for a 3-1 lead into the third.
Nikolaj Ehlers made it 4-1 early in the final period, that goal appeared to wake up the Predators. Nashville scored 3 unanswered goals to force overtime on a James Neal shot in the dying seconds.
That set the stage for Wheeler, who was vocal about recent performances by the Jets. He beat Pekka Rinne just 51 seconds into the extra frame to snap a 3 game losing streak, while also extending Nashville’s losing streak to 5 games.
It didn’t come with only good news, Dustin Byfuglien left early after getting tied up and falling to the ice.
“He’s going to make the trip to Minnesota. We’ll see how he feels tomorrow.” Head coach Paul Maurice said about his defenseman.
It is short rest before the Jets get back at it. They visit Minnesota Friday night to take on the Wild.
