Get your skates ready because the Red river trail is just about ready to open.
It took a while to get started thanks to warmer temperatures earlier in the winter, but the recent cold has things back on track.
Chelsea Thompson with the Forks says they hope to have an announcement later this week for the first section of the trail to open.
“We’re heading out onto the Red to start with. It’s basically just the section that leads from The Forks to the Norwood Bridge. It’s going to start with a skating rink and about a kilometre of trail.”
As for how far crews can extend the trail this season, Thompson knows it all depends on the weather but she is optimistic.
“It looks really favourable to get further down the Red for the next section, as well as even hopefully getting on the Assiniboine this year. Look for the first week of February to have the next phase announced.”
Temperatures are expected to get warmer by the end of the week.
