Provincial, civic and business leaders sure are excited about True North Square.
There is no question that this $400 million development will certainly help revitalize downtown. With the great mixture of business, retail, residential and fun, it should lift South Portage to a new level.
But here’s my question… What about the north side of Portage?
It’s almost like a tale of two cities with only a block of separation. On the south side we have the arena, restaurants, hotels and shops.
However, the north side has been relegated to a barely functioning shopping mall and a much higher crime rate. Will that degradation continue, perhaps at even a faster rate, now that millions are being poured into the “other side”?
The goal for the last few decades has been to get Winnipeggers to come back to the downtown region. I would assume that would include all parts of downtown and not just one area.
Who or what will be the saviour for North Portage? I wonder…
