Canadian faces should be the ones to grace our coins and stamps, not British monarchy. This the purpose of a new movement by Republic Now. The groups wants Canada Post and the Royal Canadian Mint to honour Canadians and not royalty. For instance, it points out the latest stamp of the Queen. Its release coincided with Sir John A. Macdonald’s birthday, so why wasn’t the former prime minister pictured instead?
Republic Now posts on its Facebook page:
“In its 108 years, the Royal Canadian Mint / Monnaie Royale Canadienne has NEVER put a Canadian on the head of a Canadian coin. It’s time to change that. Write to email@example.com and firstname.lastname@example.org.”
The group stresses we should be celebrating Canada’s people and Canada’s accomplishments.
So do you think Canadians – and not the Queen – should appear on our stamps and coins? Taking your calls after 1pm: 204.780.6868 or 1.844.686.6868.
