A Winnipeg School Division committee will review a new and comprehensive transgender policy at a meeting tonight.
The “Safe and Caring Policy” in support of transgender and gender nonconforming students aims to “foster a safe learning environment for all students and staff.”
The policy requires that schools should minimize activities that segregate students based on gender and institute a flexible and gender-neutral dress code.
It also says that students shall have access to washrooms and change rooms that align with their gender identity. Any student that feels the need for increased privacy should be provided access to a single-stall washroom. A Universal Toilet Room will be accessible for all students.
The policy also includes guidelines for transgender and gender nonconforming staff members as well. You can read the full document here.
