Crews are working to expand the Forks river trail two more kilometers.
The mild temperatures have been delaying the opening of the second leg, but Chelsea Thomson with the Forks tells 680 CJOB they’re expecting it to open on Sunday or Monday.
“It’s basically ready to go, but if we open it up too soon it will just get destroyed with so many skaters. So, we’re hoping the temperatures drop enough at night to keep things together.”
The extension will run south to Churchill Drive.
The trail is currently open for one kilometer from The Forks harbour to the Norwood Bridge.
Thomson says they’re not concerned about the warm weather on the one-kilometer of trail that’s already open.
“The ice for the most part is at least 30 cm’s thick. It’s also tested on a regular basis, so we wouldn’t lose that much thickness that it would become unsafe.”
