The deadly avalanche in B.C. that took the lives of 5 people this weekend likely took the sledders by surprise.
CKNW Vancouver Reporter Jon Meyer tells 680 CJOB there was no heightened risk in the snowmobile community of McBride.
Meyer says conditions in the area were sunny at the time, but despite a possible risk of an avalanche, there was no formal warning in place.
Early reports to CKNW say that those that died are believed to be from Alberta. There are mixed reports that the weather was a factor.
Some say it is an avalanche prone area, but others say it’s rare it happens there. More is expected from police later Saturday today.
