Volleyball Canada is about to confirm what has been widely speculated for months. The National Women’s Team is leaving Winnipeg and will relocate to Richmond, B.C. in 2017. The official announcement is scheduled for Tuesday, but Volleyball Manitoba Executive Director John Blacher says his provincial body was informed of the decision last week.
A strong bid submission had been made to get Volleyball Canada to consider staying in Winnipeg. That package included the Sport Manitoba Sport For Life Fieldhouse as the National Women’s Team training centre as well as commitments from numerous partners including Sport Manitoba, the Province of Manitoba, the Canadian Sport Centre Manitoba, and the City of Winnipeg.
“You know I really do think we put our best foot forward,” Volleyball Manitoba Executive Director John Blacher told 680 CJOB. “We were very excited about the development of the Sport For Life Centre and Fieldhouse that’s under construction right now and will be attached to the Sport Manitoba Building.”
Blacher says the U of M has been a great home for the National Program since 1997, but the move to the downtown area was seen as satisfying the need for change Volleyball Canada had been looking for. Halifax was also also part of the bidding process.
