Mayor Brian Bowman, along with many other big city Mayors in Canada, are not putting out the welcome mat for an anti-feminist group.
Return of Kings, led by American blogger known as Roosh V., is planning worldwide meetings on Saturday, including in Winnipeg.
Bowman says the kind of thing they promote should disgust everyone.
“You know, I wanted to ensure that Winnipeggers had a voice that was crystal clear in denouncing this type of hate that this group is promoting,” Bowman tells 680 CJOB.
Return of Kings thinks rape should be legal in a private home, for example.
But, is what the group is putting out there legal?
Bob Sokalski is a litigation attorney with Hill, Sokalski, Walsh and Olson in Winnipeg.
He says they would have to be very careful what they say, or it won’t be legal.
“It’s a crime to promote hatred against an identifiable group. Well, women, are an identifiable group, in my humble opinion,” Sokalski tells 680 CJOB.
He says if they call for sexual assault laws to be changed, that’s one thing. However, he says if they proclaim that men should be allowed to rape women on private property, he thinks that crosses the legal line or promoting hatred.
Winnipeg police are monitoring the situation and at the local meeting.
