It was a Free Agent Frenzy for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The biggest signing of the day sees former BC Lions running back Andrew Harris return to his hometown. The Winnipeg born graduate of Oak Park High School played in all 18 games for the Lions last season and led the league in yards from scrimmage with 1523, and was the CFL’s second leading rusher with 1039. Harris has only missed 5 games during his 6 seasons and has career stats of 4259 rushing yards, 2639 receiving yards, and 45 touchdowns. He was also named the Outstanding Canadian of the 2011 Grey Cup win over Winnipeg.
The Bombers also signed ex- Saskatchewan Roughriders Receiver Ryan Smith. The 5-7, 175 pound 24 year old former North Dakota State Bison speedster from Wahpeton, ND had an outstanding 2015 CFL season in Saskatchewan with 59 catches for 991 yards and 7 touchdowns.
Also, the Bombers added a third major acquisition. Hamilton Tiger Cats Placekicker and Punter Justin Medlock will also be in blue and gold next season. Medlock is a two time CFL Eastern Conference All Star and was a priority for the Blue Bombers on CFL Free Agent day after the team announced they were not going to re-sign Lirim Hajrullahu. Medlock was good on 42 of 47 FG attempts in 2015 and sports an all time league best career mark of 182/208 (87.5%) during two stints with the Ticats as well as spending time with Toronto and Edmonton, along with the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs and Carolina Panthers.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed former Saskatchewan and Ottawa Defensive Lineman Keith Shologan. The 6-2, 290 pound native of Edmonton had an outstanding 2015 season with the RedBlacks that included a career best 7 Quarterback Sacks.
Former BC Lions backup running back and special teamer Pascal Lochard has also been signed to a two year deal with the Blue Bombers. Lochard is from Montreal and was the Lions 2nd round pick in the 2014 CFL Draft.
Later in the day the Bombers added another potential starter, bringing in longtime Toronto offensive lineman Jeff Keeping. He has made 100 CFL starts and was an All-Star in 2013, also winning a Grey Cup with Toronto in 2012.
And on Wednesday the Blue Bombers officially announced the signing of former Argo Defensive Tackle Euclid Cummings who had 8 QB sacks and a forced fumble in 15 games for the Boatmen in 2015.
