Manitoba has welcomed Canada’s first transgender judge.
Kael McKenzie was sworn in during a ceremony at the Winnipeg law courts Friday afternoon.
The former prosecutor was appointed a Provincial Court judge in December.
During the ceremony, McKenzie says he’s received well wishes from across the country.
“Most moving was the outreached that I received from parents of transgender children across the country. They acknowledged their fears for their children’s future, but somehow my appointment helped allay some of those fears.”
Former Thompson based lawyer Anne Krahn was also sworn in, she will be an associate chief judge.
