Time will tell if the Winnipeg Jets acquired a future piece to what they intend to be a championship contending lineup in Thursday Night’s Andrew Ladd trade with Chicago. But some of the early reports indicate Marko Dano will be able to contribute on an immediate basis.
So just who is Dano? He’s 21 years old and is on the smaller side at 5-11 and 185 pounds. He is listed as a left shot center but prefers to the play the wing, and is comfortable on either side.

Marian Hossa played as a teenager with his father, so he became Dano’s role model. The 21 year old Austrian Born Forward played junior in Slovakia for HK Dukla Trencin’s U-18 and U-20 teams and was also a member of that country’s U-18 and U-20 National Junior teams.
Dano played for HC Slovan Bratislava of the KHL as an 18 year old and was taken 27th overall in the 2013 NHL Draft by the Blue Jackets. He broke into the North American Pro ranks near the end of the 2013-14 season with Springfield of the AHL and spent half of the next year with the Falcons before getting a chance to play for the big club in Columbus.
In 35 games with the Blue Jackets last season, Dano scored 8 goals and added 13 assists for 21 points. But he was part of the June 30th trade with Chicago for Brandon Saad. The impact of moving to a new team was lessened significantly by the presence of Hossa, who he tries to style his game after.
In 13 games with the Blackhawks this season, Dano scored one goal and added one assist. He had modest stats with Rockford of the AHL, 4-19-23 in 34 games. But a team co-leading plus 17 is an indicator he can play in all 3 zones.
The scouting report on Dano is he’s good in the corners and is able to protect the puck despite his smaller size. Columbus Blue Jackets Radio Broadcaster Bob McElligott says part of that leg strength is a by product of a “Jaromir Jagr type butt” that allows Dano to win puck battles. He can skate and has a pretty good set of hands.
Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff describes Dano as being a skilled player who competes hard and fits into the template of where the organization is trying to go. And of course getting the Hawks 2016 First Round Pick in the Andrew Ladd trade was also a key component. Especially when it appeared as though that was a price tag neither Florida or the NY Islanders were reportedly willing to pay.
Dano is expected to make his Jet debut on Saturday Afternoon in Pittsburgh.
