Blocks of St. James are heaping mounds of frozen water, and are not drivable at this hour.
A massive water main break barricaded a long stretch of Berry street north and south, and east and westbound of St. Matthews avenue.
It’s still closed at this hour as macinery is scraping the roads hoping for water to drain off. City crews say the catch basins could be frozen, so pumper trucks are there to relieve the water off the road if it won’t drain.
Crews say fluctuation in the weather can cause the water main to “pop” and break.
Several hours are needed to clear the streets, so they will likely be closed until noon. The watermain problem actually began Monday night and covered eight blocks in the area at its worst.
Drivers are asked to avoid the area.
