Kids paying for overdue library books could be a thing of the past if one city councillor gets his way.
Matt Allard wants to axe late fees for children, saying they have a negative impact.
“During the recent public engagement process, the library heard that in many cases children are borrowing less material due to overdue fines and/or the fear of being unable to pay fines if they are incurred.”
The St. Boniface councillor adds removing the fines from would provide better access for kids whose families have limited income.
“The elimination of fines on children’s library materials would have a significant positive impact on children and their families’ ability to benefit from library services. It would result in increased library usage.”
According to his numbers, the city would lose $100,000 annually if the motion is passed.
