Equal pay has long been at the crux of the fight for equal rights for women, so perhaps it’s ironic that on International Women’s Day the Canadian government has unveiled plans to feature women on money.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the Bank of Canada will pick a woman to be featured on a new bank note starting in 2018. The nomination process is wide open as long as the person is not fictional and has been dead for at least 25 years.
The Royal Canadian Mint also unveiled a special loonie commemorating the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. A total of five million coins will be put into circulation as of today.
If you want to nominate a woman to appear on the new bank note, you can do so on the Bank of Canada’s website.
