The ex-girlfriend of a Winnipeg man on trial for murder says he got out of bed on the night of the killing and came back with a wad of cash.
Meagan Taylor testfied Thursday to wrap up week one of Schuyler Van Wissen’s first degree murder trial.
Van Wissen is accused of sexually assaulting and killing 33 year old GIna Swanson in May 2011.
Taylor testified she and Van Wissen were out drinking at the Airport Hotel on Friday, May 13th. The last night Swanson was seen alive. Swanson was bartending at Dakota Community Club across town.
Taylor said she and Van Wissen got home around 2 a.m. and went to bed around 3 a.m.
She says she was woken up around 5.30 or 6 a.m. to the sound of Van Wissen leaving. She says he came back around noon with $200 dollars in cash.
Prosecutors have suggested Van Wissen tied up, sexually assaulted and killed Swanson inside her home on Edderton Avenue in Fort Garry. The jury has not heard details about how Van Wissen and Swanson may have known each other.
Under cross examination from Van Wissen’s lawyer, Martin Glazer, Taylor admitted she had a lot to drink. She told court she and Van Wissen had a beer every 10 or 15 minutes for a couple hours.
She was grilled about the exact time Van Wissen left the bed and whether the sun was up. She later admitted to telling police he had gone to work.
Taylor’s testimony wraps up the first week of evidence. A DNA expert will testify on Monday, followed by a Winnipeg Police officer before the crown is expected to close its case.
