We shouldn’t see any major flooding event this spring.
The province says warmer than normal temperatures this month have led to an early – and fast – melt, before the crest arrives from the south.
The Red is expected to crest below flood stage at Emerson over the weekend.
In Winnipeg, the crest is expected sometime between Sunday and Tuesday. Flood forecasters say ice jams could raise the level more than expected, but not enough for significant flooding.
If the river peaks as forecasted, no community dikes will have to close and the floodway won’t need to be used.
Even still, 5 city homes are being sandbagged, just in case.
Peak spring run-off has already entered the Pembina River and tributaries, the Souris River and its tributaries, as well as for some tributaries of the Red River.
