Six organizations fighting homelessness in our city are getting a boost from Downtown Winnipeg Biz.
On Friday morning, the Biz handed out $170,000 raised from last year’s CEO Sleepout.
Graffiti Art Programming was one of the organizations to receive funding.
Rene Marriott started with the program when he was in high school and now works there.
He tells 680 CJOB he was on a path to homelessness until he started working for the program.
“It’s really changed my life, I don’t know where I would be without these programs. I would like to thank them for doing everything for us because I don’t know where we’d be without it.”
Now Marriott has big dreams for the future.
“I think i’m going to be running my own business in about five years from now. I’m currently at Red River College for Business Admin. This is just starting off my creativity, because I want to make my own label and the graffiti art program is all about art, so I figure I can make my company through this.”
The organizations receiving money are Graffiti Art Programming, Red Road Lodge, Siloam Mission, Artbeat Studio Inc., Macdonald Youth Services and Union Gospel Mission.
Since 2011, the funds raised during the sleepout has given roughly 200 homeless people jobs.
The sixth annual CEO Sleepout will take place on September 29th.
