If elected, the Manitoba Liberal Party is promising to spend more money on a provincial drug treatment program for offenders.
A commitment, the party says, will reduce justice costs.
Leader Rana Bokhari says the Liberals will match the federal government’s $400,000 investment into the Winnipeg Drug Treatment Court.
“It’s a program that works, it’s a program that has evidence-based results, recidivism rates are decreasing under this program,” Bokhari says. “People are becoming productive members of society after their treatment, which is why we’re just going to double it to allow for more resources to go into it.
Bokhari says if they’re in power, the Liberals will create more spots in the program and extend it to other communities.
The program costs $40,000 per graduate, as opposed to putting an offender in jail for $70,000 each year.
It isn’t clear where the money would come from, but Bokhari says the party will share more details in the coming weeks.
