The bombings in Brussels were too close for comfort for a group of Winnipeggers.
A Taekwondo team from TRP Academy was headed to the airport in Brussels when the bombs exploded.
Winnipegger Joanne Park’s son, her brother and his family were driving up to the airport when they saw smoke pouring out of the building.
“There were fire trucks and emergency trucks, so they were literally two minutes away from the airport,” Park explains. “They’re all safe, they’re together as a team. They’re shook up and scared, of course, but they’re in good hands.”
Park says she finds the whole thing unsettling. The team is making alternate travel plans now, driving back to the Netherlands and then to Paris. They hope to be back in Winnipeg on Friday.
