He was brash, loud and easy to make fun of, so it was also easy for everyone to overlook the other side of Rob Ford.
For a couple of years now, his business card has been pinned up on my desk – that I like to keep pretty bare. I was never really sure why I did that. I think partly because he is and was one of my favourite politicians ever. To be clear though, I never voted for Rob Ford.
I lived in Toronto when he ran for mayor and after he was elected. I never supported his politics, but thought he was a good egg. After some of his personal struggles came to light, I continued to think of him as good egg – just maybe a troubled one. But aren’t we all to one degree or another.
This is a man who gave his personal phone number to residents of Toronto. This is a man who had respected journalists hide around his residential property and sift through his garbage like unrespectable paparazzi. Some people say he was Trump before Trump. But could you imagine Donald Trump ever giving Joe and Jane public his personal number? Trump would rather give them a personal salute.
May Rob Ford be remembered for all of the things people overlooked.
