The Winnipeg Jets kicked off their final home stand of the 2015-16 NHL season with a 2-1 loss against Ottawa Wednesday night.
The Sens opened the scoring early in the first period. And after a scoreless second, Mark Scheifele fired in his team leading 26th goal past Ottawa’s Andrew Hammond to tie the game up at 1-1 early in the final frame.
But just 1:56 later the Senators Alex Chiasson scored the game winning goal off a Ben Chiarot turnover behind the Jets net.
Despite the win, Ottawa became the final Canadian based team to be eliminated from the post-season when Philadelphia edged Washington 2-1 in a shootout. It will be the first time since 1970 that a Canadian team has not been part of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Winnipeg has just five games left this season and host the Chicago Blackhawks Friday Night at 7 p.m.
