The first patient in Manitoba history to be granted a doctor assisted death has passed away.
A release from the family’s legal team said that the patient died peacefully and thanked the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and the doctors involved.
A legal first last month saw a judge grant the Manitoba resident the right to a doctor assisted death. Court heard the patient was terminally ill, with less than a month to live and suffering greatly.
After a two hour hearing on March 15, Manitoba Court of Queen’s Bench Chief Justice Glenn Joyal ruled the person has the right to end their life by doctor assisted suicide.
The patient’s name, age, gender and specific illness are being kept secret under a court order.
