A new report is painting a less-than-rosy picture about Manitoba’s economy and jobs prospects as we head towards the election.
The Manitoba Prosperity Report ranks the western provinces as well as Ontario on how well they create an environment where businesses can succeed.
Manitoba Employer’s Council Spokesperson Elliot Sims says we rank right at the bottom in most categories, and it starts with our higher taxes.
“Over the last decade, we’ve seen taxes come down slightly in Manitoba in some areas. Other areas they’ve gone up. In the other provinces, they’ve all gone down consistently.”
Sims says we’re also lagging behind in terms of high school graduation rates, which has an impact on jobs.
“It’s not necessarily that we’ve been moving in the wrong direction, but we need to be moving much farther and much faster if we ever want to have a chance of competing with jobs in other provinces.”
Sims adds that Manitoba has to do more to help young people get good jobs.
