A statement of claim filed over problems with the Sturgeon Creek bridge has revealed more communication issues at city hall.
The claim against engineering firm Stantec was filed March 29th on behalf of the city by their insurance company.
But public works chair Janice Lukes admits no elected officials were aware of this until a reporter called her about it yesterday.
“The public believes that councillors should know everything, and we do know a lot. But some things, unless we’re informed or told or information is shared, we don’t.”
Lukes says it’s more of an administrative problem, but stopped short of calling it a deliberate attempt to keep council in the dark.
“It is an environment of change that we are working in, and an environment of change is good but it does have challenges. There was a communication breakdown from, probably the legal department, informing the councillor and the public works committee.”
Lukes says the claim alleges negligence against Stantec after an earth wall collapsed under the bridge, causing over $2-million in damages.
