The Brandon Wheat Kings got a tough test in Game 1 of their WHL Eastern Conference semifinal, but managed to pull out a 5-3 win over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors.
The Warriors had leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 before John Quenneville scored his fifth of the playoffs with 43 seconds left in the second, setting up a tense final frame.
When the Wheat Kings took a too many men penalty 7:30 to go, it looked like a great opportunity for the road team to go ahead late. Instead, Tanner Kaspick scored shorthanded to give Brandon the lead. Quenneville would add an empty-netter late to seal the win.
Jordan Papirny made 24 saves for the win while Zach Sawchenko stopped 33 shots in the loss for Moose Jaw. Game 2 goes tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Brandon.
