The last time Wilco came to Winnipeg, they played a few songs before a thunderstorm forced them offstage.
After their cancellation at the Folk Festival last year, the alt-rock band is the headliner for this summer’s Interstellar Rodeo.
“It was a heart-breaker for everybody. They were supposed to play, they got a couple songs in and it was just not safe to continue because of the weather,” explains Sara Stasiuk, producer of the Rodeo. “That’s always a risk with outdoor festivals. We feel really lucky and hopefully the rain and wind holds off.”
The second edition of the event runs from August 12-14 at The Forks and features a number of other big and emerging acts like Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Serena Ryder and The Strumbellas, and plenty more that may be new to Winnipeggers.
“We just did a quick count, and all of the Americans, save from Wilco, have never been to Winnipeg before,” Stasiuk says. “There are a lot of new talent discoveries, artists that people have been waiting to see for a long time.”
Another group performing will be case/lang/viers, a one-year only collaboration between Neko case, k.d. lang and Laura Veirs.
A number of ticket packages will go on sale this Saturday morning at 8 a.m. at interstellarrodeo.com. Stasiuk says a select number of them will be available for a discounted price.
