There’s a new inquest report out studying the death of a young Brandon man who died after being let out of psychiatric care.
Craig Kucher was hit by a train in 2012. He was on a two day leave from care, staying with his parents.
A judge is recommending changes to the way doctors at mental health facilities let people leave.
Specifically, it’s being suggested there be clearer protocols for telling the person taking over care of the patient what’s expected of them.
In this case, Kucher’s mom wasn’t fully looped in on what to look for in her son, whether he could be out alone or mix his medication with alcohol.
Kucher had a long history of mental illness.
It’s still unclear whether his death was a suicide or an accident.
