It will cost taxpayers a pretty penny to say goodbye to MLAs who were not re-elected.
Each one is entitled to a severance of one month’s pay for every year served. If they’ve been a member over 12 years, it doesn’t matter. The total amount is capped at a one year’s salary.
The pay does not take into account any allowances or extra pay they get for holding a cabinet post, so the maximum anyone can get is just over $93,025.
What does it add up to? The 14 members who didn’t keep their jobs will share in $1,015,520.
