Imagine your mom were a convicted killer. Or imagine you lived next door to this murderer. Or imagine your kids went to the same school as her children – where she picked them up every day.
That is the reality in the Montreal suburb of Chateauguay. Convicted killer Karla Homolka has been living there for two years, sending two of her children to local Centennial Park School (her third child attends pre-kindergarten). Parents just discovered this and are threatening to pull their kids from the school.
Homolka now goes by Leanne Bordelais, and is one of the most notorious killers in Canada’s history, known for the 1990s sex slayings of two Ontario schoolgirls, Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy. She served 12 years for manslaughter, but today parents feel like they’re the ones being punished.
One parent told Global News she’s disappointed with the school board, that “it shouldn’t be a secret. It should have been divulged to all the parents.” (You can read Centennial Park School’s statement here.)
Should the school board have told parents? Should the kids be moved to another school like some parents are demanding? Oh sure. Move the kids to another school. Just bounce them around every week. They are forced to carry the horrific burden their mother’s name and past force them to carry. Who’s really being punished here.
What would you do if you lived next door to Homolka? What would you do if your kids went to school alongside hers? And what about her children whose reputations are tarnished even though they are innocent.
