John Quenneville was the hero as the Brandon Wheat Kings scored in overtime for a 4-3 win over Red Deer on Friday. Brandon now leads the WHL Eastern Conference Final 1-0.
Along with the winner and final goal of the game, Quenneville opened the scoring as Brandon jumped out to a 1-0 lead.
That held until the third period where Red Deer scored a pair of goals to take the lead. First round NHL draft pick Ivan Provorov and Winnipeg native Stelio Mattheos put Brandon back out in front late in the game.
But the Rebels did not quit, scoring with 5 seconds left to force overtime and set up Quenneville’s heroic second goal of the game for the win.
Jordan Papirny stopped 34 of 37 shots for the win. Game 2 goes Saturday night in Brandon.
