Winnipeg’s mayor is on board with the idea of bringing the World Junior Hockey Championships back to the city.
Bidding is officially open for the 2019 tournament and a spokesperson with the mayor’s office says Brian Bowman is “keenly interested” in bringing the event back here.
We’ve hosted it before, in 1999.
In a statement, the spokesperson says Bowman has been working with Tourism Winnipeg and they’ve been in discussions with Hockey Canada.
But the statement says no decision has been made yet on whether we’ll bid for the 2019 event.
Any bid would likely need the support of True North Sports and Entertainment. They own the arena downtown but have yet to make their intentions known.
Bids must be in by May 31st. The field would then be widdled down by August 31st with a winner being chosen in time for this year’s tournanment in Toronto and Montreal.
