They’ve been helping a risk youth and families in Winnipeg for over 80 years and Macdonald Youth Services is finally bringing everything under one shiny new roof.
MYS is getting a state of the art new building at 175 Mayfair Avenue, near the Forks. A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday afternoon near the construction site.
The building will cost roughly $7.5 million dollars and be 33,000 sq ft. with three storeys.
CEO Erma Chapman is calling the move a “dream come true”.
“It means the staff working with a crisis with a child are all in the same building. They don’t have to come from all different parts of the city to do their work.”
Right now, MYS operates out of a number of different buildings in different areas of the city. Chapman says that makes things a challenge.
“It’s a mishmash and none of those facilities were ever developed to provide the kinds of services that we really do. We’re just sort of camping in.”
The new building will include a kitchen, computer labs, therapy rooms and rooms for music and art.
