Today marks the beginning of mental health awareness week.
For the Canadian Mental Health Assoication, it’s the 65th year of the week.
They’re asking Canadians to ‘get loud’ and talk more openly and honestly about mental health.
CMHA Manitoba executive director Marian Cooper explains why they’ve chosen green as their official colour.
“In the 1800s, people who wore a green ribbon, it was a sign of being insane. So we’re reclaiming that by reclaiming green as a mental health colour.”
Cooper says its important that we not separate the body and mind when it comes to being healthy.
“All the things we do for our physical health have a good affect on our mental health. Healthy eating, exercising, getting good sleep, those are all really important things for your mental health.”
There are a number of lunches and community education workshops this week. For a full listing of events visit mentalhealthweek.ca.
