Fort McMurray, Alberta is under a mandatory evacuation order after forest fires raged and took over the city.
The mandatory evacuation order meant that about 70,000 people were told to flee their homes. Former Winnipeg resident Tyler Macleod, who now lives in Fort Mac told 680 CJOB that all North bound traffic was being redirected. “I’m on the highway going southbound to Edmonton and all 6 lanes of highway are now travelling South.” said Macleod.
There was poor reception on his cell phone and Macleod speculated it was likely that the cell phone towers were down. “I was driving through downtown and both sides of the street there were buildings that were burnt to the ground. You could hear explosions…gas stations going up.” He added that all ground fire-fighting efforts had been suspended from what he had heard.
