85 per cent of buildings in Fort McMurray are still intact.
That’s from Wood Buffalo fire chief Darby Allen, who says people may be under the impression that most of the city has been levelled, but that’s not the case.
630 CHED reporter Brad Wisker was on a bus that was touring the media through the partially burned-out city.
“We saw the destruction of the Super 8 motel. As we enter the Beacon Hill neighbourhood, to the right-hand side we can see complete destruction. The fire ripped through this neighbourhood.”
Wisker says the downtown is remarkably intact.
“It’s quite amazing to see how unaffected the downtown is. After that, we went over to another neighborhood where the destruction continued. The fire ripped through quite quickly, the devastation is on both sides on the road. It’s unimaginable to think what the evacuees went through when this fire ripped through.”
Alberta Premier Rachel Notley says roughly 2,400 buildings and structures have been destroyed.
