Forest tent caterpillars take note, the city is putting you in it’s crosshairs.
The leaf munchers are starting to damage trees, so the head of insect control, Ken Nawolsky is putting them, and us, on notice. “So, until further notice, the forest tent caterpillar program will occur nightly from 9:30 p.m. til 6:00 a.m. weather permitting,” said Nawolsky.
The spraying will start Sunday night in northwest Winnipeg (Insect Management Areas 49 and 50 and 51) and the city’s website will list spraying locations as the season continues. Homeowners are responsible for forest tent caterpillar control on their property.
Treatment of Elm Bark Beetles starts next Monday. Treatment will occur between the hours of 5:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday to Wednesday, weather permitting. Treatment will occur on an ongoing basis until fall. The areas to be treated will also be listed on an ongoing basis on the city’s website.
As for those pesky mosquitoes. Larvaciding is still continuing and the spring program is being called successful. Nawolsky says nuisance adult skeeters have emerged only in small numbers.
