Fire crews are getting the upper hand on a massive wildfire near the Whiteshell.
The province says the blaze near Caddy Lake is now more than 50 per cent contained, but it is still 58 square kilometers in size.
Despite the progress, evacuation orders remain in effect for cottagers.
The fire has destroyed an unoccupied trapper’s cabin on North Cross Lake, as well as a train station built in the 1920’s — the Winnitoba Station House.
Meanwhile, the Beresford Lake fire has grown slightly to approximately 750 square kilometers and is approximately 30 per cent contained.
Evacuation orders are still in effect for Wallace Lake, which affects 61 cottages and one lodge, as well as the Beresford cottage subdivision in the Nopiming Provincial Park. Also, the Beresford and Wallace Lake campgrounds will also stay closed.
Twenty firefighters from Nova Scotia are expected to arrive in the province Friday to help fight the blaze.
