It’s a disappointing statistic.
Winnipeg police have already slapped people behind the wheel with 2200 distracted driving tickets this year.
That’s on pace to meet or beat last year’s numbers.
Staff Sargeant Rob Riffel says everybody thinks it won’t happen to them as they glance at a phone or send a text.
“Next you thing you know someone’s walked out in front of you or the vehicle in front of you stopped and it can have catastrophic consequences.”
Police say even though there are stiff penalties in place drivers aren’t getting the message.
