If you’re taking a walk in downtown Winnipeg, keep an eye out for some Indigenous art in the window of the business next to you.
Twelve artists have created works on display for the summer through the Downtown Biz’s first Indigenous Artwalk.
They were asked to create works that reflect the theme “welcome”.
Artist Renata Meconse says she conveyed it through the coming of a new season.
“One of the pieces that I did is very spring-like, summery. A lot of flowers,” she said.
She hopes her work speaks to lots of different people.
“New Canadians, tourists, Winnipeggers, people who work downtown, people who want to visit. We really want to make everybody feel welcome,” she said.
Downtown Biz Chair Deborah O’Bray says that sentiment flows both ways.
“The artists welcoming people to our city, and us also welcoming our Indigenous culture,” she said.
