The sun may be partly to blame in a crash involving a cyclist in the River Heights area Wednesday evening.
Winnipeg Police responded to a crash at Grosvenor Avenue and Wellington Crescent involving a car and a cyclist at around 7:50 p.m.
A 22 year old cyclist was severely injured and rushed from the scene in unstable condition, however he has since been upgraded and is currently listed as stable.
Police say it appears the driver was blinded temporarily by the sun just prior to the crash.
“By no means are we providing this as an excuse in no way, shape or form,” said Const. Jason Michalyshen. “We’re trying to articulate why certain collisions may occur and we need to be mindful of that.”
Michalyshen adds, now that the weather is warming up, drivers should be aware that there are more cyclists on the road.
“Whether in a motor vehicle, on a bike or in some instances on foot, we all have the responsibility to make our streets as safe as possible.”
It’s unclear if any charges will be laid as the investigation continues by the Central Traffic Unit.
