An early goal gave Brandon a promising start, but 5 unanswered goals powered the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies to a 5-3 win in the opener of the Memorial Cup for both sides.
Reid Duke opened the scoring in the first three minutes of the first, giving the WHL champs an early lead over the QMJHL’s top team.
But the Huskies took over from there, scoring 5 unanswered goals and took a 5-1 lead into the third.
The Wheaties stormed back in the final frame, out-shooting the Huskies 20-4, but could only score twice and cut the lead in half. Tyler Coulter and John Quenneville scored the goals.
Jordan Papirny turned away 24 of 29 shots in the loss while Chase Marchand made 38 saves for the Huskies.
Brandon has Sunday off at the CHL championship tournament. They play the OHL champion London Knights Monday at 7 p.m.
