Winnipeg Blue Bombers officially launched their 2016 rookie camp on Wednesday by saluting the Winnipeg high school football league and the tremendous growth it has shown in recent years. Blue Bomber President and CEO Wade Miller told a room full of graduating high school players that they should be proud of what they have accomplished and should go out and enjoy the final game of their high school careers. That game is the 16th annual Senior Bowl which showcases the best graduating high school players from across Manitoba and Western Ontario. It will be held on Saturday, May 28th at 1pm at Investors Group field, with Miller and Oak Park Raiders coaching legend Gil Bramwell as the guest coaches. Bramwell was a two-time Vanier Cup champ with the Manitoba Bisons who launched the Oak Park high school football program in 1991. Miller was a star at Sturgeon Heights high school before going on to a successful career at the U. of Manitoba, and an 11-year Hall of Fame career with the Blue Bombers.
Team Bramwell and Team Miller will compete for the Gerry James trophy when the Senior Bowl kicks off at 1pm on Saturday.
Meanwhile, some 45 players took to the field Wednesday afternoon to begin Blue Bomber rookie camp. The group included the 4 quarterbacks who will be in main camp when it opens on Sunday. The rookies will only have 3 days to make an early impression with the three-day session concluding with practices on Thursday and Friday. Most of the players in rookie camp will advance to the main camp.
