<Allexis visiting me post-op with her stuffed liver she named Live.>
Last year at this time, Winnipeg adopted a new daughter: Allexis Siebrecht. Her search for a new liver, became Winnipeg’s search for a new liver and a new life for the then 11-year-old. Today we celebrate Allexis’ milestone with her. It’s one year since her liver transplant. Happy anniversary, Allexis!
Here’s the original story I posted – and your response was overwhelming:
When Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk recently needed a liver transplant, his status may have helped him get the lifesaving organ. But did you know wn 11-year-old Winnipeg girl has been waiting for a liver donor since her birthday last October?
Allexis Siebrecht has been struggling with Biliary Atresia, a type of liver disease, since she was three months old. She’s had eight surgeries in the past two years. She also has a rare O-blood type, which makes finding a match more difficult. Allexis’ family can be uprooted to Toronto at any minute, should a match be found. So her family has started a gofundme campaign to help with financial support – and people from all over are reaching out (I posted just a couple of examples below). So, if people can reach out from across Canada to help this Winnipeg girl, let’s match that and find Allexis a match. (UPDATE: I found information explaining live liver donors don’t necessarily need to be a blood-match; deceased donors must match however. Find out more information at TransplantManitoba.ca.)
So while Eugene Melnyk may have been able to use his position to quickly find a donor, we can use an entire city to do the same. Can you save Allexis’ life?
