WINNIPEG – One person had to be rescued from a North End rooming house early Wednesday morning.
Crews responded to a two storey, four-unit residential complex on Manitoba Avenue near Salter street at around 4:30 a.m.
Firefighters managed to contain the flames in the kitchen of a second floor suite and tenants were evacuated. One man was found in a room and was carried out by firefighters. He was taken to hospital in stable condition.
“Without the excellent work of our firefighters and paramedics, the outcome of this fire could have been tragic,” said Deputy Chief, Tom Wallace, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service. “I would like to thank our firefighters and paramedics for their excellent work this morning. This fire event is a good reminder for the public to check their smoke alarms regularly and to also plan and practice a home escape plan.”
Cause of the fire is being listed as accidental, but damage estimates are unknown.
The city reminds people to stay in the kitchen when preparing food using a stove. If you leave the kitchen for even a short time, turn off the stove.
