The gradual re-population of Fort McMurray continues today.
Christein Vermeire and her family were part of the 7,500 who went home after a month away yesterday.
She tells our sister station, 630 CHED in Edmonton, while she was happy to be home, driving back in was tough.
“When I drove into the city and seen the damage, I had tears in my eyes. It was very hard to look at some houses being damaged. Then, you know, I feel guilty about being happy that my home is still standing.”
Vermeire says they knew their house was fine thanks to a security system, but it was still a relief to open the door for the first time.
CHED reporter, Brad Wisker, also got a first-hand look at the re-entry.
